Failure: My Unlikely Guide to Success
If you have never failed you have never lived.
Good morning! It is Saturday, 1/20/2024. Let’s talk about the art of failing spectacularly today.
Today’s Inspirational Quote
Failure gets a bad rap these days. We're constantly surrounded by inspirational quotes and self-help gurus preaching about the merits of positivity, perseverance and believing in yourself no matter what.
"If at first you don't succeed, try and try again!" they implore us.
"Winners never quit and quitters never win!" the posters in school hallways proclaim.
But old honest Abe had a different take. As America's famous former president observed, "If you have never failed you have never lived."
Lincoln wasn't afraid to fail—and fail big. Long before he took up residence in the White House, Lincoln was failing his way to greatness. He lost his job in 1832 and failed in business in 1833. He failed in his first run for state legislature in 1832. His sweetheart died in 1835, and he had a nervous breakdown in 1836. He lost his run for Congress in 1843 and again in 1848. He lost his bid to become a U.S. Senator in 1855. He ran for U.S. Vice President in 1856 and lost. He again ran for the U.S. Senate in 1859 and lost yet again. Finally, he was elected President in 1860!
Talk about shooting for the stars. Lincoln's failures read more like an overachiever's bucket list than moments of shame. But it was these setbacks that helped mold his character and resolve. With each failure, Lincoln learned valuable lessons that would help carry him through future hardships. And ultimately, bring him success as one of nation's most revered presidents.
So perhaps it's time we stop treating failure like it's a taboo topic that people should avoid at all costs. Failure is a natural part of life—the yin to success' yang. It helps us grow. It builds resilience and grit. It teaches us where we need to improve.
In fact, you could argue Lincoln was wrong with his quote. Failure isn't just something everyone experiences in life, it's something to be actively sought out! Only by failing as big and as often as possible do we expand our comfort zones and become better people.
So get out there and fail, people! Let's start celebrating our flops instead of hiding them away in shame. The next time you majorly mess up at work or school, hold your head up high and be proud. After all, even honest Abe would be tipping his hat in respect to your spectacular failure.
